We Love Duo! Part 2

Do you remember? **** Previously, Hilde and Spyrill, after spending a day with Duo, realized that they fought over him too much. So they made a pact that neither of them would go out with him as long as they each had a crush on him, in order to keep their friendship. And Hilde has just announced to Duo that in order to keep them from breaking their promise, they are going out with each other!
After the confrontation with Duo, Spyrill pulled Hilde aside.
"What do you think you're doing, Hilde? Aren't words alone good enough to seal a promise?"
"Not one like this. It would be too easy for one of us to be sneaky and ask him out anyway, or for him to persuade one of us to ignore the promise. If we go out with each other, the chances of that happening are zero to slim because then that would be cheating!"
"But Hilde, neither of us are bi or lesbian!!"
"Don't worry. After this is all over, we can stop pretending to go out." Hilde smirked.
"Oh, pretending, huh? And when do you supposed that will be?"
"Ah, I’m sure one of us will get over him in time." An expression appeared on Hilde's face that Spyrill could not read.
At night, Spyrill sat at her bedroom window gazing at the beautiful full moon as she pondered. Why would Hilde do something so strange like that when all we have to do is promise to each other in words? People can't "pretend" to go out…if others really believe that they're going out, and they act like it, then it's just the same as really going out. Hilde must have something up her sleeve….
At that moment, the phone rang, and Spyrill had to run to get it because she was the only one in the little house. It was Quatre on the other line.
"Hey Spyrill! I heard the news. Congrats!"
Spyrill was confused for a moment. "Um…news?"
"Yeah! About you and Hilde!"
Spyrill's heart jumped. ~ Great, now we're a headline in Gossip News. ~ "She actually TOLD you about that?" ~ I hope too many people don't find out! ~
"Actually, I heard it from Duo." Spyrill slumped her shoulders at that statement. Oh no….
"You don't think it's weird?" she asked in a hushed voice.
"No, of course not! I think bisexual relationships are totally ok."
Well, this IS Quatre I'm talking to, thought Spyrill. Just then she got a call waiting signal and told Quatre to wait. "Moshi moshi," she said.
"Hey! It's me, Hilde."
A sweatbead appeared on Spyrill's head. Speak of the devil. "Oh! Hi. What's up?"
"I just wanted to know if you're free tomorrow. I was thinking we could go to the comic store or the arcade."
"Sure, I'm free. Can you hold on? I have Quatre on the other line." After Spyrill hung up with Quatre, she and Hilde made plans to go to the comic store and hang out at Spyrill's house after school. Hilde explained to her that because of their pact, they needed time away from Duo in order to stop thinking about him.
"Ah, finally time to relax. What a busy day!" Spyrill flung her bookbag on the floor. Hilde did the same, and then followed Spyrill into her living room. "Time for my daily dose of anime!" announced Spyrill, grabbing the remote and turning on the TV. Both girls sat on the couch side by side, and for some reason there was an awkward silence between them. Suddenly they said simultaneously:
"Spyrill, I have to tell you something."
"Hilde, I have a question for you." Both girls laughed at their perfect timing. "So," began Spyrill, "what is it you wanna tell me?"
"Ask me your question first." Hilde smirked.
"Whatever you're gonna tell me is probably the answer to my question." Spyrill smirked back with more confidence than Hilde.
Hilde turned her head, and thought for a moment, so that what she had to say wouldn't come out the wrong way. "Spyrill," she began, and paused a moment, "…the more time I spend with you, the more I like you."
"Oh. Thanks." Spyrill giggled and pretended she didn't know what Hilde was really talking about.
"No, I mean…"
"You mean…." Spyrill and Hilde exchanged a gaze that contained a thousand words. The contact was broken when Spyrill averted her eyes. "But...what about me do you like?"
Hilde blushed. "Oh, I dunno…I just think you're really cool and all…and…actually, there are some things about you that remind me of Duo." She giggled with bashfulness.
Spyrill was truly flattered. She looked at Hilde with sparkling eyes. "So…the whole time we planned to get Duo, you actually wanted…me?"
Hilde giggled again. "No, actually I just started liking you toward the end of that day."
"And that's why you told Duo that me and you were going out, huh?" Spyrill had her trademark mischievous smirk on her face. "All of that 'You can't cheat on me' stuff was just an excuse?"
"No! That was all the truth! I mean, think about it, it all made sense, right? It's just that I left a little part out when I explained it to you…." Hilde bashfully ran her finger in a circular motion on the fabric of the couch. "You don't mind…do you? I know I kinda forced it upon you…but…."
Spyrill looked at her for a moment and thought. "No, it's ok…I just wasn't expecting it." Following this, there was an uneasy silence. "Aha! This is the best part!" said Spyrill suddenly, referring to the TV. They watched anime shows for the rest of the time they were there.
It was a few days after Hilde had confessed to Spyrill her feelings for her. They were at the arcade playing Dance Dance Revolution, as usual. After finishing a few games together - which took awhile, because they were pretty good - and receiving the usual applause from the crowd that always formed around DDR players, they decided to go to the ice cream parlor across the street.
Because of the tense silence that accompanied them, a short walk across the street seemed like an endless journey. Hilde tried to break the silence by asking Spyrill what she wanted. Spyrill imagined sharing a float with Hilde, with two straws in it, like the "old fashioned way". She giggled at this idea.
"What's so funny?" asked Hilde, curious.
"Nothing." Spyrill made a gesture with her hand, as if brushing the funny thought aside. "I'll probably just have a chocolate parfait. Why? You're not going to pay for it, are you?"
"Of course!"
"No, don't! You already paid for the arcade games. I'll pay for the ice cream." But no matter how much Spyrill protested, Hilde insisted on paying, and so she bought a chocolate parfait for Spyrill and a root beer float for herself. They sat down at a table for two, and then Hilde realized that they'd forgotten napkins, and before Spyrill could even begin to protest Hilde was already on her way to get some.
Spyrill watched Hilde walk halfway across the parlor to the napkin dispenser. She had never realized how cute Hilde's walk was until now. Hilde stopped at the dispenser, and Spyrill couldn't help but admire her cute, curvy figure. Then her eyes wandered to a poster behind Hilde, advertising some new treat called a "Berry Beach Bash". It was a crushed ice treat as blue as the ocean in the beach setting behind it. Spyrill daydreamed about what it would be like to go to the beach with Hilde. ~ We could swim in the waves, and walk around the beach in our swimsuits getting nice tans. Ooh, Hilde has such a cute figure, I wonder what it looks like in a swim suit…Wha! What am I thinking?! ~ Spyrill looked down abashed and could feel herself blush. Hilde returned shortly with a wad of napkins in her hand, and both of them enjoyed their ice cream, and their time together. They were, however, quite jumpy, and in fact they had been for a while. Any time they touched accidentally, they pulled away nervously, apologizing. And any time their eyes met, there was a split second of a passionate gaze that Spyrill spotted in Hilde's eyes.
"Come on, Spyrill! I wanna show you something!" blurted Hilde one evening in the middle of a movie. It had been two weeks since they'd made their pact, and Hilde had invited Spyrill over to watch Cruel Intentions with Dorothy, Catherine, and herself - all three of whom lived in that house, of course.
"Just tell me," said Spyrill. "I want to see the rest of this movie."
"No! I can't tell you. Come on!" Hilde grabbed Spyrill's hand. She led Spyrill to her room, so anxious that her grip on Spyrill's hand was very tight.
Hilde's actions - her huge grin, her cheerful tone, her excitement and energy - made Spyrill very eager to see whatever this was that Hilde wanted to show her. They both sat at the foot of her bed. "Well?" Spyrill asked. "What is it? Come on, show me!"
Hilde blushed and giggled for a bit. "I can't now…I'm too embarrassed…." She giggled more and covered her face with her hands.
How cute she is, thought Spyrill. "Oh come on, that's not fair! You work me all up about something and then chicken out at the last minute?" Spyrill gave Hilde a moment to calm down. "You gonna show me now?" Hilde looked away and blushed harder, still smiling. "What…you gonna take off your top or do something like that?"
Hilde laughed outright. "What?! No, not that!" She laughed more. "Why…do you want me to?"
It was Spyrill's turn to blush. "No! I was just saying!"
"Well don't worry, I wouldn't anyway!" After laughing a bit more, Hilde settled down. "Alright, well, it's not really something I can show you…" Hilde leaned in a bit, "…but…more like…give you…."
Hilde leaned closer until her lips touched Spyrill's. At the moment they made contact Spyrill felt a delightful tingle all over her body and couldn't help but close her eyes and lean into Hilde. This kiss was not like the one they had dramatized in Duo's room; no, this was a sweet kiss that really meant something. When they pulled away Spyrill didn't know what to do, and she couldn't do anything but stare at Hilde in awe. Finally she just laughed, a sweet, happy, contagious laugh, and so did Hilde. And they immediately knew they liked it enough to do it again.
This time, they made it last longer. Spyrill touched Hilde's face as Hilde moved closer to her. When they craved more passion, they used their tongues. Spyrill made little sighing noises, and Hilde gently laid her down on the bed. It was soft and covered in thick white sheets, and they felt like they were on a cloud floating in heaven. Hilde, for a moment, opened her eyes. Spyrill unexpectedly opened hers, and the intensity between their gaze was like nothing they'd ever felt before.
"So it looks like one of us is bi after all," murmured Spyrill, referring to Hilde, not herself.
"Or two of us." Hilde smirked. Spyrill began to disagree, but didn't know if she could do so and still be truthful.
She closed her eyes once again and, breathing heavily, continued her kiss. Every time she felt Hilde's touch it sent a tingling surge of emotions through her. Spyrill let her mind run free and let her mouth do all the work. Never before had she experienced such a fantasy! She imagined those deep blue eyes behind a mass of brown bangs. She caressed the face before her and in her mind heard Duo's sweet whisper. "Duo…" she sighed. Suddenly, the kissing stopped, forcing her eyes to open. She saw Hilde's face above her own and immediately felt remorse for her crucial mistake.
Hilde sat up and turned away. "Oh, Hilde!" Spyrill sighed. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean it!" Spyrill held Hilde in order to comfort her, but Hilde sat like a stone, unmoved by Spyrill's embrace. "Look at me." Spyrill gently lifted Hilde's chin. Hilde looked as if she were about to cry, and like she wanted to say something but couldn't. Spyrill apologized twice again, and then Hilde looked down. "Don't cry, Hilde-chan! You'll make me cry too!" Hilde forced a little smile, and put her hand on top of Spyrill's.
Finally, Hilde was able to make her comment without bursting into tears. "You still like Duo more than you like me." She smiled and made a little chuckle, more out of self-pity rather than humor. "And the purpose for us going out was supposed to be so we could take each other's minds off of Duo."
"It's ok, Hilde-chan. I still love you just as much as Duo." Spyrill cuddled up to Hilde. Hilde dropped her head and sulked. That was not exactly what she had wanted to hear.
Speaking of Duo, every time Spyrill saw him with Hilde, the big bad jealousy monster would rear its green ugly face. "She'd better not be cheating on me!" Spyrill would mutter to herself. "We made a promise!" She began to realize that she was not only jealous of Duo for hanging out with her girlfriend, but especially jealous of Hilde spending time with Duo. How can you have a crush on someone when you're going out with someone else? This got Spyrill thinking.
After about three weeks of contemplation, it really started eating at her. She finally decided to talk about it with someone: her most trusted friend, Quatre.
At the beginning of a phone conversation, she said to him, "Quatre, I'm having a problem with someone…and I was wondering if you could help me out."
"Of course! You can always talk to me about anything. Who are you having problems with?"
"Hilde."
He gasped. "What happened? Did something go wrong?"
"Eh…gomen…that came out the wrong way. You see, I was thinking about our…relationship. Actually, I was thinking a lot about Duo…so I guess he's really the problem--anyway," Spyrill sorted out her thoughts in her mind and spoke slowly. "When Hilde told me she wanted us to go out in order to take our minds off of Duo, that was a really smart thing to do on her part because she knew that if I went out with her, I wouldn't so much as look at Duo the wrong way. Not that I've stopped hanging out with him entirely, 'cause I mean he's my friend, but at least I tried to get off of my crush with him. But now whenever I see them together it makes me jealous--though I suppose Hilde also gets jealous whenever I'm with Duo, but…it's not just that. I still think about him constantly--both him and Hilde. When she's not here I think of all the sweet things we could do, but when I’m with her...I can't explain it, I mean it feels so ordinary, sometimes awkward. On the other hand, when I'm with Duo, I just want to throw my arms around him and tell him to kiss me! It feels wrong! "
"So what is it you're trying to say?" asked Quatre, which was his gentle way of saying, "Get to the point."
Spyrill sighed. "I dunno if it's right to go with her, I mean, I like Duo so much--I don't wanna hurt Hilde! So I was thinking of breaking it up."
"Ohhh, I see."
Spyrill went on further about how she really did like Hilde very much, but someday they'd have to break up anyway, because deep down she knew she was not meant to spend the rest of her life with another woman. And with time, their feelings might grow stronger and it would be harder to let go. Might as well call it off while the fire was still dim, rather than waiting until it was too late. "If we were lucky, maybe Hilde would actually fall out of her crush for me--but…I don't know if I should take that chance. Then again…I am still a bit curious, and…I want her to be happy. I just want what's best for Hilde."
Quatre paused a moment to think of some good advice he might be able to give Spyrill. "Well, you're a good friend for trying to see all aspects of the conflict, and for considering Hilde's feelings before your own. If you ask me-"
"I am asking you." She giggled.
Quatre chuckled. "Never-ceasing sense of humor," he said to himself. "I think you should take your values and put them on a scale. On one hand, you could continue seeing Hilde and fulfill your curiosity, even though you have an unsure attraction for her and risk breaking her heart in the future. On the other, you could put your morals and intuition first and break up with her now, sparing her that broken heart in the future, although you may end up hurting her anyway. That, and you'll suffer the regret of not knowing what could have been between the two of you."
"So basically you're saying whatever I choose, I'm going to hurt Hilde."
"Just do what your heart tells you to do, Spyrill-chan. I hope I helped you out."
"Yes, you did. A lot." Spyrill thanked Quatre, and soon they hung up.
Spyrill thought a lot about what Quatre had said. "Take your values and put them on a scale…."
"What is more important to me?" She was still confused, but she was determined to figure this out. She finally made her decision, and decided to act upon it before she could change her mind. During lunchtime at school, Spyrill and Hilde sat outside as usual, chatting lightheartedly. There were a few awkward pauses that Spyrill could have used to mention her feelings, but as brave as she tried to be, she couldn't find the right opening phrase. When she finally decided to open up about it, Hilde spoke at the same time. They laughed, Spyrill somewhat nervously, and she let Hilde lead the conversation. ~ Come on, girl! Just tell her! ~ Spyrill took the next chance she got. "Hilde, can I tell you…there's something I need to say…-"
"Hey girls!" shouted Duo. He wrapped his arms around their shoulders. "How're you two turtledoves doin'?" Spyrill screamed internally. She clenched her fist and faked a grin. Duo decided to join them for the rest of the lunch period. Maybe she was just being skeptical, but Spyrill could have sworn he was paying more attention to Hilde than to herself.
The bell rang before Spyrill could say anything to Hilde about her decision. As she got up to throw away her trash, she cursed in her mind. She and Hilde were about to go their opposite ways into the building; strangely, Hilde was the one to stop Spyrill.
"Spyrill," she began, "I've been noticing something strange…I think it's time to call it quits. We shouldn't go out anymore."
"Really?" Spyrill was indefinitely bewildered. She had never expected Hilde to be the one to say those words! "Why? Tell me honestly."
"When the one you're going with starts acting like a stranger to you during a normal conversation, something's up!" Spyrill blushed. Oops, she thought. "You were going to break up with me, weren't you?"
"…Yeah." Spyrill looked away shyly. For some reason she felt like a little girl who had just been caught stealing candy from a store. So she confessed. "You're right. I didn't feel like we should go out anymore because…well let's just say I'm not as bisexual as I thought I was."
"Well then, this way it's mutual. Don't look so ashamed! It's better this way."
"Ok.… But we're still friends, right?" Spyrill knew the answer to this question, but couldn't think of anything else to say to close the topic.
"Of course! Well, we'd better get going to class. I'll see you later."
Both girls separated, each unaware of the tears forming in the other's eyes. It had been done. It was over.
Spyrill sat in her next class as if in an aftershock. She couldn't believe it was Hilde, the one who'd started this whole thing, who brought it to an end! Spyrill really wished that she had said something when she had the chance, before Hilde. Even though Hilde had said it was mutual, Spyrill felt dumped.
Meanwhile, Hilde sat with her head down on her desk in a different classroom. "If you don't like me, then we have no business being together. That's the real reason why."
After their breakup, Spyrill figured she'd stop thinking of Hilde so much at night, and go back to just crushing on Duo. She was wrong. The breakup only made it worse. So did the sight of Hilde crying on Duo's shoulder the next day.
Spyrill couldn't stand the jealousy she felt when she saw Hilde with Duo anymore. She couldn't even tell who she was jealous of! But it didn't matter, because the two people in the world that she had fallen in love with both had left her for each other. It was then that Spyrill realized how much Hilde meant to her. But now, it was over, there was no turning back. She had no chance with anyone because there was no one left for her, and she felt a great pain anytime she thought of Hilde, Duo, or the idea of love. If only Spyrill hadn't said what she did. Now, there wasn't a night that passed when Spyrill didn't cry at least once, all by herself in her lonely room, gazing at the blue moon.
